A primary election is a preliminary election in which voters choose which candidate(s) from each political party will run in the upcoming general election.
In North Carolina, when there are more candidates filed from a particular political party than seats available for an office, a primary is held so the party nominates its candidate(s) for the general election.
North Carolina is a semi-closed primary state. This means that voters registered with a political party may only vote in their party’s primary election. Voters registered as “unaffiliated” may choose which party’s primary they wish to participate in.
