A primary election is a preliminary election in which voters choose which candidate(s) from each political party will run in the upcoming general election (held in November). 

In North Carolina, when there are more candidates filed from a particular political party than seats available for an office, a primary is held so that parties can nominate their candidate(s) for the general election. 

North Carolina is a semi-closed primary state. This means that voters registered with a political party may only vote in their party’s primary election. Voters registered as “unaffiliated” may choose which party’s primary they wish to participate in.
